Needless to say it is almost next to impossible to wrap up my remarkable university life into a short article. With many unforgettable memories in my mind, I start with a heavy heart. Tears in my eye while I write elucidate how much I yearn to look back, how I long to be there just for one moment, which is no longer within my reach…...my days in Taishan Medical University (now known as Shandong First Medical University).
It was back in early 2013 that I entered the premises of TMU. A naive teenager who came far away from home with high aspirations to become a fine doctor and fulfill my parents’ dream. New place, new people, it was quite difficult for me to get along. Hailing from a tropical area, I was not accustomed to the cold temperature of Shandong and morning classes. Waking up in the morning for classes seemed like a never ending struggle. But none of us can deny the positive aspects of our university. Spending time with good friends, playing sports, discussing about a study topic, involving in club activities and many more. Being the vice-president of Chinese Communication Association (CCA) for more than 1 year, I tried to do my best as a leader. And of course the fantastic teachers who helped us to get a quality education and build a better future.
There is a saying, “Everything has an end”. Within a glimpse, my time in Taishan Medical University came to an end. Five years did not feel like a long time rather a short period of mixed feelings. A moment to cherish till my last breath.
After graduation, I had to prepare myself for the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) license examination. It was a lengthy and tiresome process that I went through to get all my documents verified and make myself eligible to sit for the exam. Two months of rigorous studying have brought me to the phase where I could see my name in the list of those candidates who have passed the license examination successfully. The exam was hard and tricky, comprising of all the subjects that where included in my MBBS course. The key to crack any exam is to stay calm and focused during the examination, which I tried to do and it did not disappoint me.
Reminiscing my internship days, I completed my training from one of the reputed hospitals of my country. It started off with gynecology and obstetrics placement. GYN and OBS did not seem very interesting at first but as I began to learn more and sharpen my skills, I developed a liking towards it. I got to perform procedures like NVD, Secondary wound closure all by myself. I was also privileged to be assistant surgeon in many surgical procedures. Every day I had to deal with receiving patients, following them up throughout the treatment, keeping update on patient’s condition. This day to day hassle got rid of my shyness and created a drive to prove my worth.
The saddest part was to confront the loved ones of the expired person. I remember the first time when I declared a person dead. It was hard for me to watch his mother screaming and crying as the patient was young. Apart from the sad experiences, there were plenty of remarkable ones. The smile on the patient’s face when he or she got cured was invaluable.
After medicine I went for surgery. Over there the situation was quite familiar to me and I did not struggle to get adapted with the new cases and procedures. I got to learn many things from my respectable mentors. Going for rounds alongside the senior consultants, professors was extremely tiring yet informative. The best part of surgery placement was, I got to watch and participate in surgical procedures more often. The moment I entered the operation room, I felt the thrill, the intensity of performing a major surgery even if I was just the observer. A surgeon has to be extremely focused and aware throughout the surgery. A little bit of distraction is sufficient enough to cause major or minor injuries which can be fatal. This thrill has created a passion for surgery in me and as a result I wish to pursue my post-graduation in surgery. Gradually as time passed by, my internship came to end. It was the most amazing one year of my life.
Regarding the current situation of the COVID-19 pandemic, I got the privilege of serving my country amidst this crisis. All over the world, people are suffering from this virus and the health care workers are doing their best to make sure the patients are cured.
I am currently working at a hospital which is solely a COVID-19 dedicated hospital. Ensuring my safety, I try to perform my duties responsibly and help the general people. I hope and pray that the vaccine for this deadly virus comes to action soon because I have seen how patients suffer just for one gush of air.
I am utterly grateful to teachers and officers who have thought of me after all these years.I will study hard, Live up to your expectations. My goal is to become a successful thoracic surgeon.
